2008 Open Club Foil Championships

November 1, 2008

Date: Saturday 1st November 2008
Location: University of New South Wales Gym - Level 1
Rules: Internal Competition Rules

The UNSW Club Foil Championships were held Saturday, November 1st.

After some solid fencing in the poules, the business end of the day proved tough. In the first semi-final, Arash Karpour proved too strong for Anthony De Rosa, who did well to make top 4 in his first club open competition, capitulating to Arash 15-9. The next semi-final was an all French affair, with visiting club foilist Victor Touron dispatching our local foil femme, Tiphaine Hadacek to set up a meeting with Arash in the final.

Anthony put on another strong display in the Bronze medal match, finally finding Tiph too strong in the second period 15-10.

The gold medal match was a hotly contested match between two of the clubs foil heavyweights. Arash’s speed and dynamics were tested by Victor’s flair and point-work. Once again, French passion won over the day and Arash finally lowered his colours to Victor 15-10.

The final results were:

1st Victor Touron UNSW FC
2nd Arash Karpour UNSW FC
3rd A. Tiphaine Hadacek UNSW FC
4th Anthony De Rosa UNSW FC
5th Jack Jago MU FC
6th Ben Kovar UNSW FC
7th Jeremy Wong UNSW FC
8th Bishin Ho (Withdrawn) UNSW FC

Well done to all those who turned up, set up, packed up and represented their clubs.

Special thanks to Eddie who came in to referee; to Andrew, Nina & Ben for their camerawork (pix already on our Facebook site, and will be on the club website in the next couple of weeks); BIG thanks to Paul Musumeci who once again came to the rescue with emergency armoury work/repairs to save the continuity of the club foil championships. Also special thanks to Alex who despite receiving a broken sabre through her hand at training the preceding Wednesday night, still managed to organise scoring sheets and medal ribbons for the Club Foil championships (the black and gold ribbons look great!). We wish you a fast recovery Alex.

That’s is for the official club tournaments for the year, and training should be back to normal this Saturday.

2008 Open Sabre Championships

October 25, 2008

Date: Saturday 25th October 2008
Location: University of New South Wales Gym - Level 1
Rules: Internal Competition Rules

The UNSW Club Sabre Championships were held Saturday October 25th.

There was a solid field from a relatively new sabre club, with 9 of the total 11 sabreurs being from UNSW FC. In the poule matches, there were some great results for the club, with local Andrew Brown downing visiting Andy Jiang (Shanghai Province, China via SU FC) 5-4 in a great display of distance and timing. Also Ben Kovar racking up a victory in his first ever sabre tournament, with minimal preparation.

Into the DE, and the experience of Joe, Andy & Dave cast the shadow of the shape of things to come. Mark downed training partner Andrew to complete the top 4. Joe sent Mark for an early shower with a 15-8 win in the top 4 DE to secure his place in the final. Dave had a rematch of the NSW State Sabre Championship final against Andy Jiang, which cost him a blade (broken). Apparently whilst high, the price was right, with Dave narrowly edging out Andy 15-14 in a physical and at times highly vocal contest.

This left state team mates Joe & Dave to grind out the final. The gallery were treated to some high mobility sabre, another broken blade, and some big aerials (sabre flunge) before Joe finally succumbed 15-11.

The final results were:

1st David Hoffman UNSW FC
2nd Joe Raciborski UNSW FC
3rd Andy Jiang SU FC
4th Mark Krasilovsky UNSW FC
5th Andrew Brown UNSW FC
6th Dave Chitty UNSW FC
7th Cheryl Chan UNSW FC
8th Lena Quinto MU FC
9th Ben Kovar UNSW FC
10th Alex Andre UNSW FC
11th Tiphaine Hadacek UNSW FC

Novice Foil Championship # 2

October 4, 2008

Date: Saturday 4th October 2008
Location: University of New South Wales Gym - Level 1 & Sam Cracknell Pavillion
Rules: Internal Competition Rules

Despite a number of technical equipment issues and periodic weapon malfunctions, we finally got underway. The poule round was well contested down to the ‘sudden death’ elimination round of 8. The semi finals saw MU’s Jack Jago account for UNSW’s Jeremy Wong 15-9 to set up the gold medal showdown with UNSW’s Anthony De Rosa, who overcame club mate Tom McGreevy 15-9.

Venue booking issues forced us to relocate to our Thursday night venue, the Sam Cracknell Pavillion for the finals. In the bronze medal match, the reach of Tom McGreevy proved too much for club mate Jeremy Wong. Tom putting up a great fight to make podium in his club tournament debut.

In the main event, all eyes were on Anthony De Rosa to defend his clubs honour against visiting northern raider Jack Jago. At the end of the blisteringly fast first period, both fencers looked like they hadn’t left much in the tank to finish the match. Both coming hard off the guard line and looking to stamp their authority on the match. Neither was giving an inch. In the hotly contested second period, Jack’s speed and precision won out over Anthony’s passion and relentless pressure to take out the event. Both fencers fought well, and provided great entertainment for the finals audience.

The final results were:

1st Jack Jago MU FC
2nd Anthony de Rosa UNSW FC
3rd Tom McGreevy UNSW FC
4th Jeremy Wong UNSW FC
5th Emmanuel Kastanias UNSW FC
6th Brendan Chan UNSW FC
7th Ben Kovar UNSW FC
8th Anna Mourzine UNSW FC

Thanks goes to all the UNSW FC members who came and helped out with set up, break down, refereeing, DT, Treasury and armoury issues. Without the dedication and help of Alex, Feng, Arash, this competition would not have been possible.

Special thanks goes out to Paul Musumeci who mid-tournament manned the armoury for emergency repairs to weapons & equipment to ensure we had enough working gear. Great work Paul, thanks for stepping in.

The next armoury workshop to repair our damaged equipment and finish construction of the new club equipment will be run in the next couple of weeks, seeing as we didn’t manage to complete it before the competition. Thanks to all those that participated in the first part of the armoury course run by Jules.

Well done all. We look forward to the remainder of the club, state and national calendar events, as well as our open club sabre (October 25th, 2008) and foil (November 1st, 2008) championships.

Novice Foil Championship # 1

June 7, 2008

Date: Saturday 7th June 2008
Location: University of New South Wales Gym - Level 1
Rules: Internal Competition Rules

The inaugural UNSW FC Novice #1 Foil Championship was held Saturday June 7th. The standard of fencing from competitors, considering all have been fencing for less than 12 months, was impressive.

Strong rivalries and fierce competition led to a final worthy of a world cup (One of the best novice finals I’ve ever seen). After three grueling hours of competition, Henry Lin and Adam Chesher ground out a hard fought final going the full 3 periods of 3 minutes. At the end of 9 minutes, the score was tied at 14-14, forcing the match into overtime. In the final minute of the sudden death final, Adam took the initiative and launched a daring long distance attack. But Henry’s defence remained rock solid and he finished the bout with a text book parry-riposte.

Both fencers should be congratulated on their passion for victory, good sportsmanship and providing the crowd with a nail-biting finish to the competition in style. Well done guys!

The final results were:

1st Henry Lin MU FC
2nd Adam Chesher Silver Sword
3rd Anthony de Rosa UNSW FC
4th Dylan Edwards UNSW FC
5th Wiley To UNSW FC
6th Andrew Koon UNSW FC
7th Joseph Ling UNSW FC
8th Jeremy Wong UNSW FC
9th Alison Le UNSW FC
10th Marcus Tan UNSW FC

Thanks goes to all the UNSW FC members who came and helped out with set up, break down, refereeing, DT, Treasury and armoury issues. Without the dedication and help of Alex, Tiphanie, Arash, Michael, Eddie & Julia, this competition would not have been possible. (Eddie even took time out from writing up this thesis to ref – thanks mate, much appreciated).

Special thanks goes out to Michael who whilst the tournament was on, undertook the MASSIVE job of cleaning up the armoury (which desperately needed it). Michael, you’re a legend!

Looks like we’ll have to organise an armoury workshop to repair some of our damaged equipment and keep everything running smoothly.

Thanks also to Alex who sourced additional gear from Macquarie Uni (Club Mac), without which our championships would have taken a LOT longer to run.

Well done all. We look forward to our remaining novice competitions, as well as our open club foil and sabre championships. Stay tuned for dates to be posted.
